When does DALI belong in the design?
Interfaces need proof. DALI provides digital addressing, grouping, scenes and status queries for compatible lighting equipment. The DALI Alliance documents up to 64 control gear and 64 control devices on a subnet, but actual design also considers topology, bus supply and gateway limits.
What does tunable white require?
Mechanical safeties stay authoritative. The luminaire and driver must support colour-temperature control, and the control system needs the matching device type; a warm-looking photograph is not a technical specification.
How do RGB, RGBW, motion and presence controls differ?
Loads decide compatibility. RGB mixes red, green and blue channels for coloured light. RGBW adds a dedicated white channel, which can give more useful white light than mixing colour channels alone. Both require matching multi-channel drivers, wiring and control addresses; neither should be specified where ordinary dimmable white light is the real need.
Movement needs clear limits. A motion detector is commonly tuned to larger movement, while a presence detector is intended to recognise finer occupancy within its rated pattern. Product terminology varies, so the design checks the sensing technology, mounting position and coverage diagram. A corridor can use short motion-based timing; a desk, bathroom or reading area often needs finer presence detection and a longer, tested vacancy delay.
What causes flicker and uneven dimming?
Loads decide compatibility. Mixed drivers, loads below a dimmer minimum and incompatible control curves are common causes; circuit schedules and sample testing are cheaper than replacing a ceiling full of drivers after possession.
How are lighting cost, commissioning and future changes controlled?
Scope sets the budget. Budget depends on circuit count, dimming method, driver compatibility, sensors, keypads, emergency-lighting boundaries, panel space and the number of scenes to programme. Relay control is a valid lower-complexity alternative where only on and off operation is needed. Addressable systems add flexibility and feedback, but also add commissioning, addressing and replacement compatibility work.
Failure needs a tested path. The sequence should include a luminaire and driver review before procurement, a representative dimming mock-up, circuit addressing, scene setting after finishes are visible and a final night-time review. Maintenance records should connect each fixture, driver and control address to its location. If a network, gateway or app is unavailable, physical controls should still provide the agreed basic response. Replacement drivers must be checked against the control method rather than selected only by wattage.
